About Mandela Rhodes Foundation
The Mandela Rhodes Foundation, established in 2002, aims to develop leadership capabilities in Africa through education, training, and building a support network. It combines the legacies of Nelson Mandela and Cecil John Rhodes to create opportunities for leadership development. The foundation offers postgraduate scholarships and a leadership development program to enhance leadership skills in Africa.
Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship 2025-2026
The Mandela Rhodes Foundation offers scholarships to qualified individuals annually. The scholarship covers postgraduate studies (Honours and Masters degrees) in any field, excluding MBAs, at recognized South African higher education institutions. The scholarship includes:
- Tuition and registration fees as determined by the institution
- Study materials allowance
- Accommodation, meal, and medical aid allowances set by the MRF
- Economy-class travel allowance for international Scholars (to and from their institution)
- Personal allowance set by MRF
The MRF leadership development program consists of residential workshops, regional group pods, and mentoring. Workshops focus on leadership, reconciliation, entrepreneurship, and education. Group pods strengthen local support networks, enhance learning, and improve scholars’ experience. Mentoring offers one-on-one reflection, advice, and intergenerational networking.
Scholarship Requirements and Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African citizens or citizens from any African country
- Postgraduate students at South African universities or tertiary institutions
- Between 19 and 29 years old (under 30 when taking up the scholarship)
- Possess a first degree or be in the process of completing one by January 2022
- Above-average academic records
- Intent to study a postgraduate qualification (Honours or Masters) at a recognized institution in South Africa
- Attend all compulsory elements of MRF’s leadership development program
- Show potential to embody MRF’s founding principles (education, leadership, entrepreneurship, reconciliation)
- SAQA verification of qualifications for shortlisted candidates

Eligible applicants must apply online at www.mandelarhodes.org/scholarship/apply. Submit the following supporting documentation:
Certified copy of ID document
Certified copy of passport (if not an SA citizen)
Certified copy of Degree certificate
Transcripts of academic results
Details of proposed course of study
Three recommendation letters
Two short essays (personal journey and MRF principles)
Selection Process
Applications open on March 14. Submit documents and essays.
Applications close on April 21. Late or incomplete applications won’t be accepted.
Candidates will be notified of progress in June, July, and August.
Virtual interviews will be conducted in the Final Round.
Selected scholars secure university acceptance and study visa by October.
