About MMEG (Margaret McNamara Education Grants):

Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) is a non-profit, public organization established in 1981. The organization’s mission is to encourage and support women in developing nations by providing them with educational scholarships. MMEG aims to empower women to shape their own futures and contribute to the development of their communities and countries. The organization takes inspiration from Margaret McNamara, the wife of the fifth President of the World Bank, who used her position to promote gender equality and education. In honor of her significant contributions, Margaret McNamara received the Medal of Honor, the highest civilian honor awarded by the United States, before her passing.

The MMEG Bursary 2024:

MMEG offers bursaries to female students in South Africa for the academic year 2024. These bursaries are applicable only at selected universities in South Africa and are designed to support women from underdeveloped nations in pursuing their education and improving the lives of women and children in their respective countries.

The scholarship provides the following benefits:

  • Funding of up to US$7,000 (the amount may vary depending on fund availability).

Eligibility Criteria for the Bursary:

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply for the MMEG Bursary:

  • Must be a South African citizen or have a permit to study in South Africa if from another country.
  • Only female students are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be 25 years of age or older at the time of the application deadline.
  • Must be enrolled in one of the specified degree programs, including certificates, undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral studies.
  • The applicant must be enrolled in one of the specified universities in South Africa (a list of eligible universities is provided).
  • Applicants should be registered for full-time or part-time programs with at least two subjects per term.
  • Commit to studying for the entire term after receiving the bursary.
  • The applicant must be enrolled for at least one more academic term.
  • Must not be related to staff members, retirees, board members, or spouses of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank Group, or Inter-American Development Bank.

To apply for the bursary, follow these steps:

Documents Required:

Applicants need to prepare and submit the following documents along with their application:

  • Valid ID documents.
  • Passport with a photo (for foreign students).
  • Permit or visa page with an updated passport (for foreign students).
  • Second passport with a photo (if the student has dual citizenship).
  • Proof of enrollment at a university.
  • Academic records and transcripts.
  • An essay describing the applicant’s background, education, achievements, strengths, career aspirations, and commitment to assisting women and children in underdeveloped nations.
  • An essay describing the applicant’s thesis (if applicable) or how their current academic endeavors relate to their long-term career objectives or volunteer work.
  • Two reference letters: One from a professor at your university and one character reference (not a family member).

Note: All documents must be submitted in PDF, JPEG, or PNG format.

Closing Date of the Bursary:

The application deadline for the MMEG Bursary is September 14. Ensure that your application is submitted before the deadline, as late submissions will not be accepted.
