About the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme:

The Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme is a collaborative initiative involving the Western Cape Government Department of Transport and Public Works, tertiary study institutions, relevant professional organizations, and several non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This program is designed for students interested in pursuing studies in the fields of engineering and building science.

The term “Masakh’iSizwe” translates to “Let’s Build the Nation,” reflecting the program’s goal of producing graduates with degrees or higher diplomas who can contribute to the province’s infrastructure development as its economy grows and the demand for improved transport routes and settlement opportunities increases. Bursary recipients not only receive opportunities for internships during their studies but also the potential for long-term employment after graduation.

Masakh’iSizwe Bursary 2024-2025:

For the 2024-2025 academic year, the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme is open for applications from students interested in pursuing higher education in the fields of Transport, Engineering, and Built Environment. Specifically, the bursary is applicable to the following fields:

  • Town/City and Regional Planning
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Architecture
  • Construction Management

Bursary Coverage:

The Masakh’iSizwe Bursary provides comprehensive support to students, including:

  • Prescribed study materials and textbooks
  • Tuition fees
  • Food
  • Lodging
  • Transportation

In addition to financial support, the program offers various benefits such as support programs for students, internship opportunities, and potential employment after graduation. Bursary recipients may be required to participate in activities during their studies, including events, workshops, academic experiential learning, and outreach programs.

Upon graduation, bursary recipients are expected to “work back” the bursary by dedicating one year of service in the public sector for each year they received the bursary. Those working for the Department of Transportation and Public Works will also undergo a Professional Development Training Programme to become professionally registered.

Eligibility Criteria For The Bursary:

Before applying, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Completion of Matric or equivalent
  • South African citizenship
  • Full-time enrollment or intent to enroll in one of the specified fields at an approved university
  • Acceptable universities for study include the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch, or the Cape Peninsula University of Technology
  • Preference may be given to students from rural communities, financially disadvantaged backgrounds, females, and students with disabilities.

Closing Date Of The Bursary:

The application deadline for the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary is August 31. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
