ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SACTA
The South African Cultivar and Technology Agency (SACTA) was established to address the need for new technology in self-pollinated or open-pollinated grain and oilseed crops in South Africa. SACTA is a central institution responsible for administering breeding levies for various crops, including wheat, barley, soya beans, and certain canola cultivars.
SACTA offers a bursary program for the academic year to support postgraduate studies in fields relevant to the grain and oil-seed industry. The bursaries are administered by the SACTA Trust and cover various fields of study, including agronomy, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, food sciences, plant breeding, and more.
MORE ABOUT THE SACTA BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & PAYMENT
The value of the bursary depends on the level of study. Honours students can receive funding up to R68,250 per annum for two years, MSc/Masters by Dissertation students can receive up to R99,750 per annum for two years, and PhD/Doctoral Research students can receive up to R131,250 per annum for three years. The bursary funds are paid out based on the approved progress reports by the recipient and their supervisor, with the first installment disbursed in January.
MORE ABOUT THE SACTA BURSARY PROGRAMME – SERVICE CONTRACT & SELECTION
Upon graduation, bursary recipients are required to work in the grain and oil-seed industry of South Africa for a period equal to the duration of the bursary received. Shortlisted candidates will undergo telephonic interviews, and successful applicants will be notified within eight weeks of the application closing date. If no feedback is received within this timeframe, the application should be regarded as unsuccessful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SACTA BURSARY
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered:
- South African citizenship
- Completion of Matric
- Full-time enrollment in or intention to study towards a relevant Honours, Masters, or Doctoral qualification in the South African grain and oil-seed industry
- Enrollment or registration at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution
- Not receiving any other funding or bursary awards (unless agreed to by the Trust)
- Intention to conduct a dissertation/thesis approved by the Trust
- Willingness to work in the South African agricultural industry after completing studies
- Familiarity with and agreement to the SACTA Bursary conditions, policies, and procedures
- Agreement to the terms of the Legal Undertaking on the application form

Along with the online application, clear copies of supporting documentation must be submitted, including an ID document or passport, a color ID photo, curriculum vitae, proof of tertiary registration and fee statement, full tertiary academic record, details of proposed research, and a motivational letter supporting the application.
