SASMT Bursaries 2025-2026
About the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT):
Founded in 1918 by a group of music teachers in Cape Town, the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) is the oldest professional music society in Southern Africa. SASMT represents music teachers across various settings, including schools, private practice, music centers, colleges, and universities.
About the SASMT Bursary Programs:
SASMT offers several bursary programs to support music students pursuing their studies in South Africa. Here are the details of each bursary program:
- David Reunert Bursary:
- Award Value: R1,500
- Intended for music students who plan to teach or perform music professionally.
- Eligibility:
- South African citizen
- Aged between 18 and 25
- Matric certificate or equivalent
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship:
- Award Value: R5,000
- Intended for students studying stringed instruments, with a focus on the violin.
- Eligibility:
- South African citizen
- Matric certificate or equivalent
- May study locally or internationally
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Gladwell Scholarship:
- Award Value: R12,000 (payable in two installments)
- Intended for music students who plan to study music (instrumental, composition, or vocal) locally or internationally.
- Eligibility:
- South African citizen
- Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
- Minimum grade 8 standard of music examining bodies
- Under 25 years of age
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Kathleen Irish Scholarship:
- Award Value: R12,000 (payable in two installments)
- Intended for talented music students with financial need who plan to study piano at the tertiary level.
- Eligibility:
- Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
- Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
- Proven financial need
