About the Bursary Provider – Shoprite

Founded in 1979 in South Africa, the Shoprite Group began with the acquisition of eight Cape Town-based supermarkets. Today, Shoprite operates more than 270 stores across 16 countries in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. The company owns almost 2000 corporate stores, including Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Checkers Liquor, Checkers MediRite, OK Furniture, OK Express, House & Home, Hungry Lion, Shoprite Liquor, Shoprite MediRite, and Usave. Additionally, the Shoprite Group owns 367 franchise brand stores across South Africa and Namibia, including Friendly Stores, Friendly Liquor, Megasave, OK Foods, OK Minimark, OK Grocer, OK Value, Sentra, and Enjoy.

About the Shoprite Bursary Programme – Fields Covered

Shoprite invites students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2024/2025 academic year. Bursaries will be awarded for studies in the following fields:

  • Accounting (CA Stream – SAICA) (10 bursaries will be awarded)
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences (10 bursaries will be awarded)
  • Criminology (3 bursaries will be awarded)
  • Data Science (10 bursaries will be awarded)
  • Food Science (10 bursaries will be awarded)
  • Information Technology/Systems (10 bursaries will be awarded)
  • Retail Business Management (60 bursaries will be awarded)
  • Supply Chain & Logistics (10 bursaries will be awarded)

More About the Shoprite Bursary Programme – Coverage Value & Service Contract

The bursary covers the following expenses: tuition fees, books, and an allowance for accommodation. The value of the bursary ranges between R30,000 and R60,000, depending on the field of study and the institution.

After graduation, bursary recipients are required to work for Shoprite. The work-back obligation is one year of employment for each year of funding received.

  • Accounting (CA Stream – SAICA): Chartered Accounting students can join the Shoprite Finance team and the Accounting Articles Programme.
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences: Graduates join the Fresh Foods/Freshmark team.
  • Criminology: Data & Crime Analysts graduates join the Security & Loss Prevention Department.
  • Data Science: Graduates join the Shoprite Data Science Academy.
  • Food Science: Graduates join the Shoprite Fresh Foods/Freshmark team.
  • Information Technology/Systems: Graduates can join Shoprite and the SAP Academy.
  • Retail Business Management: Graduates join Africa’s largest retailer in retail management.
  • Supply Chain & Logistics: Graduates join as future logistics and supply chain specialists.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 30 days of the application deadline. If you do not receive feedback by this time, please consider your application unsuccessful. Internal candidates will receive first consideration before external applications are reviewed per Shoprite’s Employment Equity goals.

Eligibility Requirements for Shoprite Bursaries

Accounting (CA Stream – SAICA) Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards BCom Accounting, BAcc (CA stream) degree
  • In 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study or PGDA/CTA
  • Minimum overall average of 65%
  • Minimum 65% in Accounting, Auditing, and Taxation subjects
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Biological and Agricultural Sciences Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards BSc in Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Botany, Zoology, Genetics and Biotechnology, or any Agricultural degree
  • In 3rd or 4th year of study
  • Minimum overall average of 60%
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Criminology Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards Bachelor of Criminology, BA Law/BA Social Work with Criminology as major, BA Honours in Criminology
  • In 2nd year of study
  • Minimum overall average of 65%
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Data Science Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards a degree or postgraduate qualification in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research, Quantitative Management, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Data Engineering
  • In 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study or Honours
  • Minimum overall average of 60%
  • Minimum 65% in Mathematics from 2nd year of study
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Food Science Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards a degree in Food Technology (Food Tech) or Food Science
  • In 3rd or 4th year of study
  • Minimum overall average of 60%
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Information Technology/Systems Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards BSc/BCom majoring in Information Technology/Systems Analysis
  • In 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study
  • Minimum overall average of 60%
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Retail Business Management Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards a Diploma in Retail Business Management
  • In 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year (Advanced Diploma) of study
  • Minimum overall average of 65%
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Supply Chain & Logistics Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Not older than 27 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards BCom in Logistics (Quantitative Management), BSc in Operational Research or related degree/qualification
  • In 2nd or 3rd year of study
  • Minimum overall average of 60%
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
