Southern African Development Community (SADC) Scholarship

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SADC

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is a Regional Economic Community consisting of 16 Member States in Southern Africa. The SADC Member States include Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The SADC was established to promote socio-economic development, peace, stability, and security in the region.

The SADC Annual Scholarship is awarded by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) to students from SADC Member States. The scholarship aims to increase awareness of Southern Africa’s history of liberation, cooperation, and regional integration, as well as recognize the contributions of the SADC founders.

ABOUT THE SADC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The SADC Annual Scholarship is available for full-time studies towards Masters, Doctoral, Postdoctoral Studies, or Research programs in Social Sciences. The scholarship focuses on topics related to the historical dimensions of development and peace in the SADC region since colonialism, regional economic and political integration, and democracy.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SADC SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be eligible for the SADC Scholarship:

  • Must be a citizen of a SADC Member State.
  • Must intend to pursue full-time studies in the SADC region for a Masters, Doctoral, Postdoctoral Studies, or Research program.
  • For Masters program applicants: Must have completed an Undergraduate degree in a relevant field at a recognized university. Male applicants must be 30 years old or younger, and female applicants must be 35 years old or younger.
  • For Doctoral program applicants: Must have completed a Masters Degree in a relevant subject that allows entry into a Doctoral or Postdoctoral program at a university in the SADC region. Male applicants must be 35 years old or younger, and female applicants must be 40 years old or younger.
  • Must provide proof of English language proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL) for applicants from non-native English speaking countries.
  • Must intend to return to the country of citizenship after completing studies.
  • Must not be a SADC Secretariat Staff member or an immediate family member.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SADC SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must download and complete the SADC Scholarship Application Form. The application form, along with the required supporting documents, must be submitted through the SADC National Contact Points at the Member States’ level. South African students can apply via email to the provided contact person.

CLOSING DATE FOR THE SADC SCHOLARSHIP

The closing date for applications is 30 April. Applicants are advised to submit their applications before the closing date to ensure consideration.
