Stellenbosch University Admission Requirements
Understanding the Admission Requirements and Policies at Stellenbosch University
Embarking on your educational journey at Stellenbosch University begins with a thorough understanding of our Admissions Policy and the Terms and Conditions applicable to new applicants. Here’s an overview of the academic prerequisites for prospective students:
National Senior Certificate (NSC) Pass Essentials:
To achieve an NSC pass upon completion of Grade 12, the following are mandatory:
- Proficiency in two South African languages.
- Either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.
- Three additional 20-credit subjects.
- Life Orientation (please note that Life Orientation is not calculated in your average score).
For a successful NSC pass, the minimum achievement levels are:
- At least 40% in your Home Language.
- A minimum of 40% in two other subjects.
- No less than 30% in two additional subjects, one of which must be an official language at First Additional or Home Language level.
- A minimum of 20% in the remaining subject.
Bachelor’s Degree Entry Requirements:
- A minimum of 30% in a South African Language of Learning and Teaching.
- An achievement rating of 4 (equating to 50% – 59%) in four 20-credit subjects.
Calculating Your NSC Average:
Your NSC average is determined by adding your highest score in the Language of Learning and Teaching to your next five best 20-credit subject results (excluding Life Orientation, Advanced Mathematics, Mathematics 3, and non-NSC subjects). This sum is then divided by six to arrive at the average.
Assessment of International Qualifications:
For applicants with international schooling credentials such as Cambridge International, International Baccalaureate, and others, the final school-leaving results are considered. Specific minimum requirements for these curricula are available here. In addition, program-specific requirements detailed in the respective Faculty outlines must be met.
Basic Admission Requirements for Stellenbosch University:
- An NSC or IEB school-leaving certificate, certified by Umalusi, for admission to bachelor’s degree studies.
