SUBTROP Lindsey Milne Bursary 2024-2025

About SUBTROP:

The South African Subtropical Growers’ Association, known as SUBTROP, is an organization dedicated to promoting the farming, marketing, and distribution of subtropical fruits such as mangoes, avocados, and litchis in South Africa. This association provides its members with various services, including technical support, market information, research coordination, and more. SUBTROP operates through its head office in Tzaneen, Limpopo, as well as satellite offices throughout the subtropical fruit-growing region. It is essentially a union of three key associations: the South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA), the South Africa Mango Growers’ Association (SAMGA), and the South African Litchi Growers’ Association (SALGA).

Overview of SUBTROP Lindsey Milne Bursary:

The SUBTROP Lindsey Milne Bursary program is named in honor of Dr. DL Milne, who made significant contributions to the subtropical fruit industry. Dr. Milne had a long and distinguished career in the industry, serving as an employee in the Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Fruit, General Manager of Westfalia, and later as Chairman of the Subtrop group. This bursary program is designed to support students aspiring to pursue a career in the South African subtropical fruit industry.

The bursary is initially awarded for one year but can be renewed for the following year based on the recipient’s academic performance. The amount of the bursary is determined according to the student’s financial needs and is subject to annual review.

Obligation and Selection:

Bursary recipients are required to enter into a contractual agreement with SUBTROP. Under this obligation, students must work for SUBTROP for a period equivalent to the duration of the bursary. However, if no positions are available within SUBTROP, students are not obligated to the organization and will be assisted in finding placements with various members of the growers’ association.

Students receiving the bursary are encouraged to focus their seminars and projects on subtropical crops such as avocados, mangoes, and litchis whenever possible.

The selection of eligible bursary recipients is made by a panel of judges, and applicants will receive feedback on the outcome of their applications.

If a student fails to pass the course for which the bursary was granted, they will be required to repay the bursary. Repayment can be made over a period equal to the length of the bursary, with payments starting the year after the bursary was received.
