If you’re considering enrolling in this qualification for the first time in 2017 or later, please be aware of an important change. Starting from 2020, the National Diploma in Game Ranch Management will no longer be available, as it is being replaced by qualifications aligned with the new Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework. Admission Requirements and Selection Criteria:

For applicants who obtained a Senior Certificate before 2008, the admission requirements include having a Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification with a D symbol at Standard Grade for English and either Biology, Physical Science, or Mathematics. Applicants with an E symbol at Standard Grade will also be considered.

Recommended subjects: None.

Admission is based on the normal M-score with a weighted Swedish scale, and a minimum of 20 points is required, with bonus points awarded for subjects like Biology, Geography, Agriculture, and prior experience.

For applicants who obtained a National Senior Certificate in or after 2008, the admission requirements include having a National Senior Certificate with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, or an equivalent qualification, with specific achievement levels in English and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.

Recommended subjects: Agricultural Sciences, Geography, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences.

Applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 19 (with Mathematics) or 20 (with Mathematical Literacy) to be considered for this qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Equivalence, and Status: Refer to Chapter 30 of Students’ Rules and Regulations

Registration for Subjects in this Qualification: January and July

Training Excursions, Field Trips, and Practicals:

• Training excursions, field trips, and practical classes are compulsory and may involve additional expenses beyond class fees. Students should be prepared with basic camping equipment. Further details will be provided during registration.
• A minimum of three compulsory training field trips are scheduled during the training period. Performance on these field trips is integral to semester marks, and a pass mark is required for each to pass the semester.
• Costs for training field trips typically cover travel, accommodation, entrance fees, and some meals. Precautions against diseases like malaria and tick-bite fever may be necessary.

General:

• Uniforms may be required during practical classes and can also be worn to regular classes. Details about uniforms will be provided during registration.
• Given the nature of the training, some level of risk is involved. While precautions are taken to prevent accidents and injuries, students are encouraged to consider taking out insurance. More information will be available at registration.

Financial Support, Loans, and Bursaries:

The university administers the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for financial support, and there are some departmental bursaries available for senior students. These include the Stud Breeders (Wildlife Ranching South Africa) and the South African Hunters’ Association Bursary. You can find more information through the Department.
