UCT Admission Requirements for Law
The University of Cape Town (UCT) requires all applicants who are normally resident in or at school in South Africa to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) in Academic Literacy (AL) and Quantitative Literacy (QL). However, applicants to the 3-year graduate LLB programme are not required to write the NBTs.
Admissions Bands for Law Faculty at UCT
There are three admission bands – A, B, and C – applied in the Law Faculty. Each band has specific eligibility and admission requirements:
Band A (Guaranteed Admission)
Eligible Applicants: All South African (SA) applicants
Faculty Points Score (FPS): 510 or above
NBT: AL (Proficient), QL (Intermediate)
Band B (Probable Admission)
Eligible Applicants: All South African applicants
Weighted Points Score (WPS): 495 or above
Note: WPS is determined by weighting the FPS by the applicant’s disadvantage factor. For example, an applicant with a maximum disadvantage score of 10% and an FPS of 450 will meet the 495 WPS requirement (450 + 45 = 495).
NBT: AL (Proficient), QL (Intermediate)
Band C (Possible Admission)
Eligible Applicants: Only SA applicants in targeted redress categories
FPS: 460 or above
NBT: AL (Proficient), QL (Intermediate)
No Band (International Applicants with NSC)
Eligible Applicants: International applicants with the National Senior Certificate (NSC)
FPS: 520 or above
NBT: AL (Proficient), QL (Intermediate)
Additional Information
FPS Calculation: The FPS is calculated out of 600 by adding together an applicant’s six matric subject marks, excluding Life Orientation.
Redress Category: The Faculty has a redress category with a lower FPS requirement to ensure fairness for historically disadvantaged individuals.
Transferring/Non-SA Students: International or transfer students should contact the Law Faculty Office for specific application and admission details.
Scholarships: The Faculty of Law offers various scholarships based on academic merit and transformation goals. Some are awarded automatically, while others can be applied for.
NSFAS: Students seeking financial support must apply directly to the National Student Financial Assistance Scheme (NSFAS) via their platform.
