The UCT Amathuba login is your gateway to the University of Cape Town’s digital learning platform — a cloud-based system that replaced Vula and now powers courses, assignments, grades, and collaboration for every UCT student. But Amathuba is only one piece of a larger digital ecosystem that also includes the UCT online application portal, the PeopleSoft student administration system, and the UCT SSO (Single Sign-On). This guide walks you through all of them — how to access Amathuba, how to apply to UCT, how to track your application status, and how to reset your password.

⚡ All UCT Portals — Direct Access

UCT Login Links 2026-2027

UCT uses several separate portals, each with its own purpose. Use the correct link for what you need — applying, learning, checking results, or managing your student account.

What Is UCT Amathuba?

Amathuba is an isiXhosa word meaning opportunities, chances, and prospects. It is also the name of UCT’s digital learning platform — a purpose-built LMS (Learning Management System) powered by D2L’s Brightspace, introduced to UCT students from 2023 onwards as the successor to the older Vula platform. Amathuba is managed by CILT (UCT’s Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching) and is entirely separate from the ICTS infrastructure that manages passwords and email.

It runs on Amazon Web Services with a published uptime of 99.99%, making it consistently accessible whenever you need it. A key advantage over Vula is the rich mobile learning experience through the Brightspace Pulse app, which delivers push notifications for tasks, grades, content updates, and upcoming deadlines — and allows content to be downloaded for offline access.

Like all UCT web-based services, Amathuba uses the UCT Single Sign-On (SSO) system. Once you log into one UCT service, your browser stores an authentication cookie and you do not need to log in again when switching to another SSO-enabled service during the same session.

How to Log Into UCT Amathuba 2026-2027

Amathuba uses UCT’s Single Sign-On system. You log in with your UCT network username and password — the same credentials used for UCT email, PeopleSoft, and other UCT web services. For a broader overview of the UCT student portal ecosystem and how Vula fits in, see our UCT login and Vula access guide.

1

Navigate to amathuba.uct.ac.za

Use an updated browser — Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. The Amathuba login page will prompt you via the UCT SSO system. Note that Amathuba is a CILT service and is not managed by ICTS — for eLearning issues, contact cilt-helpdesk@uct.ac.za, not ICTS.

2

Enter your UCT username

For registered students, your UCT username is your student number. For PeopleSoft specifically, your user ID is your student number in upper case letters. Use the same credentials across all UCT SSO services.

3

Enter your UCT network password

This is the same network password used for UCT email, Eduroam Wi-Fi, computer labs, and all other UCT SSO services. If you have forgotten it, use the Password Self-Service tool — changes reflect instantly without needing to contact ICTS.

UCT Online Application Portal 2026-2027

All UCT applications — undergraduate and postgraduate — are submitted online at applyonline.uct.ac.za. Key application dates for the 2027 academic year: applications opened on 1 April 2026 and close on 31 July 2026 for undergraduate qualifications (South African and international). UCT will not consider applications received after the closing date.

UCT’s Open Day for Grade 10–12 learners was held on 25 April 2026. If you missed it, the UCT website publishes recorded sessions and faculty information for prospective students year-round.

Application fee

An application fee is required for every application. UCT students, UCT graduates, and Semester Study Abroad (SSA) applicants are exempt (except for GSB programmes). Application fees are non-refundable — payment does not guarantee admission.

Payment reference (EFT)

When paying by EFT for most degrees/diplomas, use the reference format: 11196 [applicant number] (e.g. 11196 ABCDEF001). GSB applicants use: GSB [first name] [last name]. You receive your applicant number by email after your application is captured.

Documents to prepare

SA ID or passport, Grade 11 and Grade 12 September results (current learners), any tertiary transcripts if applicable, and sworn translations for documents not in English or Afrikaans. Postgraduate applicants also need a CV, motivation letter, and proof of English proficiency if required.

After submitting

Once your application is submitted and acknowledged, you receive login credentials by email. Use them at PeopleSoft (studentsonline.uct.ac.za) to track your status. Submitted applications cannot be changed online — contact admissions@uct.ac.za for post-submission changes.

⚠️ Important: UCT is not permitted to disclose your application status telephonically. Monitor your email closely and check the PeopleSoft portal regularly — updates are released in phases and are published there first.

📊 How to Track Your UCT Application Status

After submitting your application, UCT sends you login credentials by email. Use these to log into the PeopleSoft system at studentsonline.uct.ac.za to track your application online. If you have not received your login details, check spam — or you may also use your full name and date of birth to access the status portal. For a comprehensive guide on accessing all UCT student portals including Vula, see our UCT student portal and Vula login guide.

Status Meaning Action Required
Application Received Your application has been submitted and captured in the UCT system. Ensure application fee is paid. Monitor email and portal.
Application Being Processed UCT is reviewing your academic record and supporting documents. No action needed. Check portal regularly — updates are released in phases.
Outstanding Documents Required supporting documents are missing or incomplete. Submit immediately via email to admissions@uct.ac.za.
Offer of Admission Congratulations — UCT has offered you a place to study. Accept the offer. You are not a student until you complete full registration.
Unsuccessful Your application did not meet admission requirements or spaces were unavailable. Explore alternative programmes, apply for a later intake, or check appeal options via admissions@uct.ac.za.

💡 Offer timeline: If your application is successful, you may only receive your offer of admission two months or more after submitting — especially for competitive programmes. UCT processes a large volume of applications and releases outcomes in phases after all applications for each programme have been assessed.

UCT Registration 2026: Key Facts

Receiving an offer of admission does not make you a UCT student — registration is the final step. All undergraduate students for 2026 could register from 22 January to 13 February 2026. Students who registered late faced a penalty of R2,000. Registration dates differ across faculties and programmes — confirm your specific dates on the UCT website.

Registration is done through your PeopleSoft student portal. Log in at studentsonline.uct.ac.za on the date provided to receive the registration link. International students must complete pre-registration clearance with the International Office (visa, medical aid, and fee holds) before academic registration is permitted.

⚠️ Fee hold: Students with an outstanding fee account will NOT be allowed to register until the account has been settled. Before registration opens, ensure your fees are up to date or that NSFAS/bursary funding confirmation is in place.

PeopleSoft: Results, Fees & Student Administration

PeopleSoft — accessible at studentsonline.uct.ac.za — is the Oracle-based student administration platform managed by UCT’s Student Systems Support (SSS). It is the central hub for everything administrative. Log in with your UCT student number in uppercase letters as the user ID and your UCT network password.

A critical point many students miss: your end-of-year official results are only available on PeopleSoft — not on Amathuba. Amathuba shows coursework and assignment grades; PeopleSoft holds the official academic record, unofficial transcript, and final examination results. Keep your contact details and bank account information updated in PeopleSoft — funding awards and refunds are processed using the details stored there.

Results

Official end-of-year results, current course enrolments, and unofficial transcripts. Final exam results are only here — not on Amathuba.

Fee Account

View your electronic fee statements, payment history, outstanding balance, and funding status. Cancellation of registration forms are also submitted via PeopleSoft service requests.

Contact & Banking Details

Update your address, email, cellphone, and bank account number. Incorrect banking details cause refund delays. Update immediately after any change.

Service Requests

Submit administrative requests — curriculum changes, proof of registration, cancellation of registration, external credits, and international pre-registration clearance — all via PeopleSoft.

🔄 UCT Password Reset: Amathuba & All UCT Services

One UCT network password controls access to Amathuba, PeopleSoft, UCT email, Eduroam Wi-Fi, computer labs, and all UCT SSO services. A reset updates all of them at once. UCT’s Password Self-Service tool handles resets immediately — no call to ICTS required.

Password Self-Service (recommended)

Navigate to the UCT Password Self-Service tool via icts.uct.ac.za. Log in with your current credentials and select Forgot Password if locked out. An OTP is sent to your registered mobile number or alternate email. Enter it to reset your password. Changes are instant — no waiting for ICTS.

OTP setup — do this in advance

You can only receive an OTP if you have registered your mobile number and alternate email on the Password Self-Service system. Set this up while you still have access — it is the only way to self-serve a reset without visiting ICTS in person.

Application portal (pre-registration)

If you cannot log into the application status portal using your credentials, you may also use your full name and date of birth as an alternative authentication method. For application login issues, contact sss-helpdesk@uct.ac.za.

💡 After resetting on Windows: Restart your computer and update your saved password in any programs that store it (email client, wireless connection) — otherwise you will be locked out again on next login as those programs attempt to authenticate with the old password.

The Bottom Line

UCT’s digital ecosystem is three systems working together: Amathuba for learning, PeopleSoft for administration, and the Password Self-Service for access. Set up your OTP contact details before you need to reset anything, check PeopleSoft for official results, and use CILT — not ICTS — for Amathuba support.
