Understanding the Credit System for Bachelor’s Degrees in the College of Humanities
Overview of Levels and Credit Requirements:
Module Levels:
Level 100 Modules: Can be taken in any year.
Level 200 Modules: Require at least 80 credits to start.
Level 300 Modules: Require at least 224 credits in at least four subjects, including 64 credits at the second level.
Degree Duration:
Most degrees are three-year programs (six semesters).
Some degrees take four years (eight semesters).
- Examinations: Held at the end of each semester.
- Earning Credits:
- Passing a module/subject earns credits towards the degree.
- Credits are essential for progressing to the next year of study.
- Credit Accumulation for Degrees:
- Three-Year Degrees: Require a total of 384 credits.
- Four-Year Degrees: Require a total of 512 credits.
- Credit Distribution:
- At least 96 credits at levels one and two, and 128 credits at level three for three-year degrees.
- Four-year degrees require an additional minimum of 128 credits in the fourth year.
- At least 192 credits from two major subjects (divided across levels).
- No more than 160 credits from first-level modules.
- At least 64 first-level and 64 second-level credits must be from subjects offered by the Home School.
- At least 16 credits in each of at least four different subjects (including major subjects).
- Language Requirement:
- Bachelor of Arts students must complete 16 credits in a language not studied as a first language in Grade 12.
- All students must register for isiZulu (ZULN – 16 credits), unless exempted due to studying Zulu in matric.
