UKZN Music Library | University of KwaZulu-Natal

Established in 1972, the Eleanor Bonnar Music Library is one of the finest libraries of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It encompasses a vast collection of books, journals, microfilms/fiche, scores (including a large and very valuable collection of historical sets and complete editions), tapes, LPs, compact discs, VHS tapes, and DVDs. The Music Library also houses VHS and DVD playback facilities

Much of the world’s music is represented in the collection of 18000 LPs and CDs, and in addition there is an archive collection of 78 r.p.m. disks numbering 12000, and a substantial collection of audio- and video-tapes, many of great historical importance. Students have access to all these recordings by means of 20 listening booths, equipped with turntables, CD players, tape-decks, and amplifiers.

Four Special Collections
  • a rare archive of black South African popular music
  • the Malcolm Hunter Collections, consisting of recordings of jazz and swing, dating from 1895-1980
  • the Wilf Lowe Collection, which includes bebop and other styles from after World War II
  • an ethnomusicological record collection, which includes such series as Ethnic Folkways, UNESCO, OCORA, and The Sound of Africa.
