On the third Sunday of June, many countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Japan, India, the Philippines, South Africa, and China, observe Father’s Day. Germany observes the Day on Ascension Day, which falls 40 days after Easter. On March 19, Italy, Spain, and Portugal celebrate. Austria and Belgium celebrate on the second Sunday of June, Denmark on June 5th, and Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland on the second Sunday of November. On February 23, Russia commemorates Father’s Day as Defender of the Fatherland Day. On June 21st, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates commemorate the first day of summer. According to the United States Census Bureau, 60% of all males in the United States are fathers, with 8% of children born to men under the age of 20, 60% of children born to men between the ages of 20 and 29, and 32% of children born to men over the age of 30.
On April 24, 1972, President Nixon signed P.L. 92-278 into law, making Father’s Day a federal holiday celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
