In South Africa, attorneys often provide legal advice, consult with clients, and draft contracts. They also typically focus on one area of law, such as Family Law, Tax Law, or Commercial Law.

What exactly does an attorney do?

Attorneys advise and represent clients in civil and criminal proceedings. They offer expert advice, prepare paperwork, and appear in court to represent their clients. They clarify legal concerns to clients, advise them on litigation affecting them, and conduct extensive research on all case aspects, including official evidence such as a police report. They pay great attention to the legal system aspects that are pertinent to the client’s case and look for previously filed pleadings that are relevant.

Attorneys develop a strategy on behalf of their clients in order to discover timely and cost-effective solutions to legal difficulties. Attorneys try to resolve cases quickly rather than taking them to trial. Attorneys get acquainted with a client’s case and actively defend their best interests, as well as assist clients in discussing plea bargains or other arrangements with the district attorney’s office. They also counsel clients on how to behave in public while accusations are pending. Attorneys must have a Juris Doctor from a legal school and pass the state Bar test.
