Grades R–12 National Curriculum Statements (NCS)
The National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12 expresses the knowledge, skills, and values that should be taught in South African schools. This curriculum is designed to guarantee that children acquire and apply knowledge and skills that are relevant to their own lives. In this way, the curriculum encourages knowledge in local contexts while keeping global imperatives in mind.
The National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12 aims to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, and values required for self-fulfillment and meaningful participation in society as citizens of a free country, regardless of socioeconomic background, race, gender, physical ability, or intellectual ability.

The following concepts underpin the National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12:
Social change entails redressing historical educational disparities and providing equal educational opportunities to all segments of the society.
Encourage an active and critical approach to learning rather than rote and unquestioning learning of given truths.
High knowledge and skills: the minimum knowledge and abilities to be obtained at each grade level are stated, and high, attainable standards are set in all subjects.

Human rights, inclusion, environmental and social justice: incorporating the ideas and practices of social and environmental justice, as outlined in the Republic of South Africa’s Constitution. The National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12 is sensitive to diversity concerns like as poverty, inequality, racism, gender, language, age, handicap, and others.
valuing indigenous knowledge systems: recognizing this country’s rich history and heritage as important contributors to nurturing the values enshrined in the Constitution; and
Credibility, quality, and efficiency: delivering a quality, breadth, and depth of education equivalent to that of other countries.
The National Curriculum Statement for Grades R-12 seeks to educate learners who can: recognize and solve problems, as well as make decisions using critical and creative thinking;
operate well both as individuals and as members of a team;
responsible and effective organization and management of themselves and their activities
acquire, analyze, organize, and critically evaluate data
In diverse ways, effectively communicate through visual, symbolic, and/or linguistic skills;
employ science and technology effectively and critically, demonstrating responsibility for the environment and others’ health; and
Recognize that problem-solving situations do not exist in isolation to demonstrate a comprehension of the world as a series of related systems.
Inclusivity
Each school’s organization, planning, and teaching should prioritize inclusivity. This can only happen if all teachers understand how to identify and resolve learning impediments, as well as how to plan for diversity. The key to managing inclusion is ensuring that all appropriate support structures within the school community, including teachers, District-Based Support Teams, Institutional-Level Support Teams, parents, and Special Schools as Resource Centres, identify and address barriers. Teachers should employ curricular differentiation tools such as those given in the Department of Basic Education’s Guidelines for Inclusive Teaching and Learning to address barriers in the classroom (2010).
What is the National Curriculum Statement’s purpose?

What’s the distinction between NCS and caps?
What were previously known as Learning Outcomes and Assessment Standards in the NCS are now known as Content and Skills in CAPS. In CAPS, numeracy is now known as mathematics, and literacy is known as language. A learning area is now known as a subject. CAPS provides teachers with extensive week-by-week preparation.
When did the national curriculum statement first appear?
