Mossel Bay is the largest town on the Garden Route and is a popular holiday destination. This town has many things to see, including museums and historical figures. In this article, we’ll explore some of these top attractions in more detail:
Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex: historical facts and figures
This museum is housed in a building that was originally the home of captain Bartolomeu Dias. It’s a great place to learn about the history of Mossel Bay and its surroundings, from those early days until today. The museum is open daily, but only between 10 am and 4 pm (hours may vary depending on the season). You’ll find it directly next to the church on your way into town from the airport or port. It’s wheelchair accessible so that everyone can enjoy this South African treasure!
Mossel Bay Lighthouse
Mossel Bay Lighthouse. Built-in 1864, this is the oldest lighthouse on the South African coast. It has been declared a heritage site and is open to public tours. The 1,834-foot tower is also the tallest of its kind in South Africa!
This lighthouse was constructed by David and George Stevenson. Their father, Robert Stephenson, designed many other famous lighthouses including those at the Isle of May in Scotland and Bell Rock off Arbroath in Scotland as well as the London Bridge which spans Canada Place (Canada Place Pier) and Burrard Street Bridge (North Elevated Highway).
St Blaize trail
The St Blaize Trail is located in Mossel Bay and stretches for 7km. It’s a popular hiking trail with great views, which makes for a moderate hike. The scenery is beautiful—you’ll see mountains, valleys, and even waterfalls along the way!
Doski hiking trail
A 8KM trail, the Doski Hiking Trail is a great way to explore the local flora and fauna. The trail is also a great opportunity for you to get some exercise in, as well as fresh air.
