June can feel like the longest month of the year – but school-age children will be pleased to know that it’s also the month in which they get two extra weeks of summer holidays. Some schools, however, will be closed in June. Read on to find out when schools are closed in South Africa and how you can plan around these closures if your child will still be in class during this month!
Northern Cape
June is a time when many schools and universities around the world close for the summer break. This is because of university holidays, or because they are located in warmer climates. The northern cape has a few notable exceptions. There are only two major universities in the Northern Cape, namely the University of North West and Potchefstroom University, both situated in Potchefstroom.
Western Cape
The Western Cape is one of the nine provinces of South Australia. It has a population of just over 3 million people, and it covers an area of over 130 000 square kilometres. One thing that sets the Western Cape apart from other provinces is the large number of schools that are found throughout the region – there are more than 2200 schools in total. As a result, holidays can be complicated to predict when you’re trying to plan a trip or make travel arrangements for your children.
Eastern Cape
Public schools are generally closed from the end of November to the end of January. Public schools are also closed at Christmas and Easter. The Eastern Cape is one province that has public school closures from December 1 to March 1.
