When Can You Get Your Learners in South Africa?
At least 17 years old
To apply, you must be 17 years old or older on the exam day.
All learner’s permits, driving licence cards, temporary licences, and professional driving permits that expire between March 26, 2020, and March 31, 2022, are regarded to be in good standing, and their validity dates are extended for an additional grace period that ends on April 15, 2022.
If you have a learner’s license, you can only drive under the supervision of a licenced driver. The licenced driver must additionally possess a professional driving permit if the classification of the vehicle you are operating calls for one.
A learner’s licence is a document that attests to your proficiency in operating a motor vehicle and adhering to traffic laws. The 24-month lifespan of the learner’s permit cannot be extended.
For the various types of motor vehicles, several learner’s licences are issued:
Code 1: This is for a motor cycle, a motor tricycle, or a motor quadricycle, with or without a sidecar. If the motorcycle’s engine does not exceed 125 cc, you must be 16 years of age or older to apply; if it does, you must be 18 years of age or older.
A motor vehicle, including a minibus, bus, or cargo vehicle, falls under code 2 if its gross vehicle mass is less than 3,500 kg. On the day of the exam, you have to be at least 17 years old.
