When did Jan Van Riebeek Arrive in South Africa?

On April 6, 1652, Van Riebeeck was assigned to build a ship refuelling post at the southern tip of Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. Van Riebeeck arrived at the Cape on April 6, 1652, in three ships: the Reijer, the Dromedaris, and the Goede Hoop.

Where did Jan Van Riebeeck arrive in Cape Town?

A former ship’s physician sailed into Table Bay in 1652—150 years after Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape. He was tasked with setting up a VOC refreshment station beneath Table Mountain, and his name was Jan Anthoniszoon Van Riebeeck.

What was his objective?

The Dutch East India Company asked Van Riebeeck to assume charge of the first Dutch settlement in South Africa in 1651.

How did he live there in South Africa?

Until 1662, Van Riebeeck served as the colony’s commander at the Cape of Good Hope. He then received a promotion and worked in the Dutch East Indies as the Governor-secretary general from 1665 until 1677. He never made it back to the Netherlands to settle down. On November 2, 1664, his wife Maria passed away at Malacca, now a part of Malaysia, at the age of 35 when they travelled to Van Riebeeck’s next post. On the JaVan island of Batavia (now Jakarta), Van Riebeeck passed away in 1677.

What sort of impact did he have?

When he exiled Autshumato, a Khoikhoi translator, to an island in Table Bay for his offences against the Dutch authorities in 1658, Jan Van Riebeeck’s government started a tradition. After the seals that lived there, the Dutch gave the island the name Robben. Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners will also be transferred to Robben Island several years later.
