When is Shivaratri in 2022 in South Africa
In South Africa, Hindus celebrate Maha Shivaratri on this day. Shivratri, also known as Maha Shivratri, is a significant Hindu festival that is observed annually as a form of tribute to Lord Shiva. Mahashivratri means “the grand night of Lord Shiva” when translated into English. Depending on the traditions observed, there are some variations in the precise date on which this festival is observed.
When is the South African Shivaratri observed?
Shivratri is observed either on the 14th night of the Hindu month of Phalguna or on the 13th night of the Hindu month of Maagh during the waning phase of the moon. On this day, devotees worship Lord Shiva in the hopes of atoning for their sins and finding salvation.
How the date for Shivaratri is determined each year
On the fourteenth night of the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Palguna, Shivaratri is observed.
Hinduism’s importance of the festival
Tamasic traits are being destroyed under Lord Shiva’s supervision. Since night is a representation of Tamasic traits, Shivarathri is celebrated at night. We fast and pray before we begin in order to calm down and control these Tamasic characteristics. We placate Shiva, the Superintendent or Swami of these Tamasic traits, because we are unable to accomplish this on our own. So, in Krishna Paksha, Shivarathri is observed on the fourteenth night of Palguna.
How to observe the celebration
After taking a morning bath, offer adoration to Surya, Shiva-Parvati, and Luxmi Narayan while keeping a daytime fast. During each of the four succeeding three hour periods, people gather at temples to worship Lord Shiva. Bhajan and kirtan singing, leaf offerings, readings from the Bible, and scripture singing are all required at every session. Each session must conclude with aarti and closing prayers.
How it’s observed
Devotees get up early on Shivratri to take a bath in the sacred Ganges. They then dress cleanly and go to a shivlinga (the idol that represents Lord Shiva) to pray. In milk or water, the shivlinga is bathed. Along with garlands, flowers, and fruits, bael leaves—sometimes referred to as bail, beel, or shree phal—are also provided. While praying for health and happiness,
Unmarried ladies pray to Lord Shiva for a good spouse just like him in order to ensure the happiness of their husbands and families. As they chant prayers, they make three or seven circles around the shivlinga. Incense sticks are burned while lamps are lit. Some worshippers recite the Lord’s name while wearing a rudraksha seed rosary.
