On September 24, Heritage Day recognizes and honors the cultural diversity of our country. On this day, South Africans commemorate the rich cultural diversity that makes up their country’s people. Numerous activities are held around the nation to mark this day.

What makes September 24th Heritage Day?

Shaka Day, a day set aside to honor the Zulu King of Shaka, was originally known as the 24th of September in South Africa. He was credited with creating the Zulu country by bringing the Zulu tribe together. South Africans would visit his tomb annually to pay tribute to him.

Since when does South Africa observe Heritage Day?

Heritage Day, an official national holiday, was originally instituted in 1995 in recognition of the nation’s diversity and abundance in terms of “intangible cultural heritage,” or what is more popularly known as “living heritage.”
