When is the Start of Winter in South Africa?

For most of the year, South Africa’s climate is mild and warm, but when winter rolls around, those in the country’s southernmost regions know that it’s time to start preparing for frigid temperatures and rare snowfalls. While South Africa’s official seasons don’t technically begin until late September or early October, the colder weather will start to set in by mid-August at the latest in any given year – sometimes as soon as July–so you can plan accordingly if you live in the southernmost part of the country.

The Fall Equinox (September 22)

The Fall Equinox is the day in which the length of daylight and nighttime are equal. In South Africa, the Fall Equinox generally takes place on September 22nd each year, where there is a 12-hour difference between sunrise and sunset. Â On that day, people can expect to see a mixture of sunrise and sunset within a 24-hour period. Â The days will get shorter from that point onwards until December 21st when it will be dark all day long.

The Winter Solstice (December 21)

The winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere is June 21, so winter starts on the day of the summer solstice. This means that it’s always dark when winter begins and it’s always light when summer begins.

What are some cold weather tips for travellers?

It’s always a good idea to pack some winter clothing when you’re travelling in Southern Africa, especially if you’re going to be outside for any length of time. Hats and gloves can be lifesavers if the weather takes an unexpected turn while you’re out on safari. It’s also wise to carry a scarf or two with you, as it will come in handy for both fashions and keeping warm.
