KwaZulu-Natal is a province in South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu was merged with the Free State to create the new Southern African country of South Africa after apartheid. There are four official languages spoken in this region: Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans and English.

It is in the country’s southeast, with a long shoreline on the Indian Ocean and sharing borders with three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Eswatini and Lesotho.

Its capital is Pietermaritzburg, and its largest city is Durban. Its most recent population census found it has slightly fewer residents than Gauteng.
