What is the history of Greytown?

Greytown was founded in the 1850s and named after Sir George Edward Grey, the governor of the Cape Colony who subsequently became Premier of New Zealand. In 1854, a Lutheran church was erected. A church bell brought to town in 1861 for the Dutch Reformed Church to summon people. The Dutch and English congregations were at odds, and the church bell was stolen and buried, only to be discovered 74 years later during the construction of some homes near the old church. In 1904 a wonderfully built Town Hall was inaugurated. The Bambatha Rebellion occurred in 1906 as a result of a poll tax and other repressive policies placed on the Zulus.
