Where Is Tzaneen in South Africa

Tzaneen is a big tropical garden town in South Africa’s Limpopo province, located in the Mopani District Municipality. It is located in a fertile high rainfall zone with tropical and subtropical agriculture taking place over an area of 20,000 square kilometers (7,700 square miles). After Polokwane, it is the second largest town in Limpopo.

Within a 30 km (19 mi) radius, there are approximately 475,000 inhabitants, with the town itself having a population of around 30,000. Tzaneen is now a proud Tsonga and Bapedi homeland. There are approximately 225,000 Bapedi. Tzaneen is home to the tribes of Balobedu ba ga Modjadji, BaNareng ba ga sekororo, Batlou ba ga makgoba, Bathlabine ba ga mogoboya, BaKgaga ba maake, Bakgaga ba maupa, and Babirwa ba ga Raphahlelo, phooko, and Bakoni ba mametja. Similarly, around 220,000 Tsonga tribes of Shiluvane-Nkuna tribe Hosi Muhlaba-Shiluvane (132,000 people/subjects) and Valoyi tribe Hosi Nwamitwa-Valoyi (91,000 people/subjects) claim Tzaneen as their native territory, resulting in a 50:50 Tsonga-Bapedi ratio at Tzaneen. Both the Tsonga and Bapedi Nation populations extend beyond Tzaneen and may be found in significant numbers in the neighbouring towns of Bushbuckridge and Hazyview, which are 191 kilometers (119 miles) south-east of Tzaneen, where they coexist amicably in this section of the Lowveld. The White population is approximately 25,000 individuals, primarily Afrikaners and a very small minority of English, Portuguese, Scottish, Irish, and German. Tzaneen’s white population is made up of more than 90% Afrikaners. The distance between Tzaneen and Johannesburg is roughly 420 kilometers (260 mi).

What is the meaning of Tzaneen?

Tzaneen gets her name from the Sepedi word ‘Tsaneng,’ which refers to a little basket called a ‘Tsana.’ Tsana was made of Lehlaka bamboo grass. Because of the lush riverbank, the area was known for producing high-quality bamboo grass, which was used to build many types of kitchenware. Tsana was a well-known local utensil. People traveled from all over to see the popular Tsana. Later, the area became known as DiTsaneng (a place where Tsanas are made). When colonists arrived, the name was changed to Tzaneen, as it is now known.
