When travelling to South Africa, it’s important to know the visa rules of each country before you get on the plane. Getting an incorrect visa or overstaying your welcome can land you in some serious trouble with the South African authorities, and these problems can carry over to other countries around the world that have agreements in place with South Africa. This ultimate guide to applying for a visa in South Africa will provide all the information you need to make sure your stay goes off without any problems whatsoever.

Step 1: Getting Started

1. We recommend that you start by researching the type of visa you need, as they designate each for different purposes. For example, an entry permit may be necessary if your stay will exceed three months but less than six months.

2. If you don’t know what type of visa you need, contact the Department of Home Affairs or your nearest Embassy or Consulate in your home country to ask about what kind of visa would be appropriate for your situation.

3. Your passport must have at least one blank page and not expire within six months from the date on which you enter the country. The passport should also contain one blank page available for endorsement with a visitor’s permit.

4. Ensure that your name is printed correctly on all pages of your passport and that it matches the name shown on any other travel documents in use such as boarding passes and tickets etc.

Step 2: Visiting SA as a tourist

You may enter SA as a tourist, provided you meet the conditions of your visa and have permission from the Department of Home Affairs. If you are a foreign national who wishes to visit South Africa on holiday, you will need to apply for a visitor’s permit. You will not be allowed into the country without this permit or any other necessary documents required by the authorities.

Step 3: Obtaining a Provisional Residence Permit

If you want to stay and work in South Africa, you will need an additional residence permit. The permit is only valid for one year and needs to be renewed. To apply, complete the form from the Department of Home Affairs, gather all your documents as listed on the form, and submit it at your nearest DHA office. Once everything is processed, you will receive a letter of application with instructions on how to collect your document.

Step 4: Permanent Residence Application

If you are approved for permanent residence, you will be issued a Certificate of Eligibility. This is the document that allows you to work and live permanently in South Africa.

Step 5: Acquiring your South African Passport

It is also worth noting that you will need to present your passport when applying for your visa. If you do not have one, then please refer to the website of the Department of Home Affairs.
