What is called UIF?

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (“The Fund”) is formed by the Unemployment Insurance Act 63 of 2001 and the Unemployment Insurance Amendment Act 10 of 2016.

What is the purpose of the UIF?

The UIF is a fund established to mitigate the effects of unemployment for a short time period.

Who is eligible for UIF in South Africa?

Employees who have registered with and contributed to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) are eligible for UIF.

For what reasons can you claim UIF?

When a person becomes unemployed or is unable to work due to maternity, adoption, or parental leave, or sickness, he or she can file a claim with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

Can I claim from the UIF fund if I have resigned?  

You cannot make a claim if you have resigned from your work. Unemployment benefits are only available if you have been fired or retrenched, or if your contract has expired.

What kind of benefits is covered by the UIF?

The UIF covers the following kinds of benefits namely:

1. Unemployment benefits

2. Illness benefits

3. Maternity benefits

4. Death benefits

When may I apply for illness benefits?

If you are sick for more than two weeks, you may be eligible for illness benefits.

How long must you work to qualify for UIF?

In order to qualify for the full credit days you must work as a contributor for more than four years.

Who is required to apply for UIF?

If a person employs people for more than 24 hours per month, he or she is obligated by law to register with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and contribute to the fund.

Do casual workers pay UIF in South Africa?

The legislation stipulates that any employee who works for more than 24 hours in a month must contribute to UIF.

How much does the employee pay to UIF?

The amount of the contribution due by an employee, must be 1% of the remuneration paid by the employer to the employee.
