About NWU (North-West University)
Founded on January 1, 2004, North-West University (NWU) was established through the merger of the University of North-West, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, and parts of Vista’s Sebokeng Campus. NWU plays a significant role in the South African government’s efforts to transform the higher education system. The university aims to provide high-quality academic opportunities, enhance research output, improve student pass rates, and achieve higher corporate governance rankings.
NWU Postgraduate Academic Merit Bursary 2025-2026
NWU offers the Postgraduate Academic Merit Bursary for financially needy and talented students pursuing postgraduate studies at the university. The bursary is intended to support academic excellence and is available for students in the first year of their Master’s, Honours, or Doctoral degrees from other universities.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the NWU Postgraduate Academic Merit Bursary 2025-2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must have achieved an average of 75% (Cum laude) in the preceding qualifying degree.
- Must be registered for a formal course/degree in any NWU discipline.
- Only students enrolling in their first prescribed postgraduate course or Honours degree are eligible.
- Must be a South African citizen.
- Must provide academic records of the preceding qualifying degree.
How to Apply
NWU students do not need to apply online; the bursary will be automatically awarded to eligible students. However, students from other universities should follow these steps to apply:
- Log in using the Firefox browser.
- Fill out the online application form.
- Submit the required documents to your registered campus (Mahikeng, Potchefstroom, or Vanderbijlpark).
- The academic record of the preceding qualifying degree should be included as a final record with a passing result.

Note: The academic record attachment should be a single PDF document containing all records. Separate attachments sent via email will not be accepted.
Closing Date
The application deadline is April 30. Late applications require a written confirmation from the Faculty.
