AIMS graduates aiming to pursue a PhD degree at a South African university may qualify for a half bursary of up to R90,000. The bursary is disbursed in three installments: R40,000 during the first year of study, R25,000 during the second year, and R25,000 during the third year.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the AIMS bursaries, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

Masters and Doctoral Studies at the AIMS Research Centre:

  • South African citizenship
  • Pursuing a postgraduate qualification in Mathematical Science
  • Preference given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, but all students are welcome to apply

Masters Studies (Half Bursary):

  • AIMS graduate intending to pursue a PhD at a recognized South African university
  • University will contribute an equivalent amount toward the bursary
  • Studies to commence in February of the following year
  • Maximum of 10 hours of tutoring per week

PhD Studies (Half Bursary):

  • AIMS graduate intending to pursue a PhD at a recognized South African university
  • University will contribute an equivalent amount toward the bursary
  • Studies to commence within eight months of completing the AIMS program

Application Process:

Interested applicants should download and complete the appropriate application form from the AIMS website. Along with the completed form, the following documents must be submitted:

Masters and Doctoral Studies at the AIMS Research Centre:

  • Proposal of intended study (maximum two pages)
  • Academic record to date
  • Short CV

Masters Studies (Half Bursary):

  • Confirmation of acceptance into the Masters program and a half bursary award (including the amount) in a letter from the proposed supervisor
  • Proposal of intended study (maximum two pages)
  • Short CV of the supervisor (if not previously supervised AIMS students)

PhD Studies (Half Bursary):

  • Confirmation of acceptance into the Doctorate program and a half bursary award (including the amount) in a letter from the proposed supervisor
  • Proposal of intended research topic
  • Short CV of the supervisor (if not previously supervised AIMS students)
