About the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT):
The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) is part of the provincial government of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. DEDEAT’s mission is to develop and grow the economy within the Eastern Cape province. They are committed to various fields, including economics, environment, and tourism, with a focus on improving economic prospects, environmental sustainability, and tourism opportunities in the region.
About the DEDEAT Bursary:
DEDEAT is offering bursaries to students pursuing studies in the fields of Economics (BCom), Environment (BSc), and Tourism. The bursaries cover a wide range of subfields within these disciplines, ensuring that students with diverse interests and career goals can apply. Upon graduation, bursary recipients are required to complete a one-year internship with the department.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the DEDEAT Bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be 35 years old or younger.
- Reside in the Eastern Cape province.
- Have a demonstrated financial need, with an annual income not exceeding R5,000.
- Students who have completed Matric must have achieved a minimum overall “C” symbol.
- Preference will be given to students from rural and impoverished areas.
How to Apply:
Application forms for the DEDEAT Bursary can be obtained from your nearest DEDEAT regional office or the DEDEAT Head office. Application periods typically run between June and September each year.

Applicants must include the following documents with their application:
- Certified copy of your ID document.
- Passport-size photo.
- Matric final results certificate or June results.
- Certified copies of parents/guardians’ ID documents.
- If currently in Matric: a confidential report from the school principal and an acceptance letter from a recognized tertiary institution.
- If unemployed: proof of parents/guardians’ income (latest payslips).
- If parents/guardians are unemployed or retired: a certified affidavit confirming this.
