Does it Snow in South Africa?

Yes, it snows in South Africa but in certain areas of the country. And unfortunately, most of the country does not get to experience this wonder during winter. Unlike in the West, Winter occurs between June and August in South Africa. If you want to see snow and have fun skiing, you may have to travel to the mountains of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape. 

How much does it snow in South Africa?

Unfortunately, it does not snow everywhere in South Africa and that makes it harder for us to calculate snowfalls since they are not the same in each snow region. But if we were to determine how much it snows in South Africa, we can say the country experiences an average of 15 inches of precipitation. 

Where does it Snow in South Africa?

If you are a snow lover, visit these places during winter. Here are the following places that experience snow.

 Matroosberg

Matroosberg is located two hours outside of Cape Town and records some of the highest snowfalls in the Western Cape. Matroosberg is a great place to live with very cheap accommodation. It has many hotels and ski resorts because of the snow and it is a great tourist place. 

Sutherland

Sutherland is one of the lucky places to experience snowfall during winter. It is a favourite form many foreigners and tourists because of the warm and friendly locals. There are several cheap accommodations including cozy guest houses and so many fun things to do during winter. 

Ceres

If you are looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, we highly recommend Ceres of the year and most especially during winter. You do not have to worry about accommodation. There are many hotels and guest houses and the food and culture are to die for. 

Fraserburg

Fraserburg is another incredible and magical place during winter. Be warned, if you are a foreigner/tourist, you will never want to leave after visiting this place. 

Since it snows in South Africa, it is no surprise there are ski resorts in the Western and Eastern Cape. One of the top ski resorts is the Tiffindell Ski Resort. It is located in the Drakensberg Mountains and is a favourite place for many ski and snowboarding lovers. But you will have to go from June through September because that is when they are open.
