In South Africa, how long does it take to obtain a temporary passport?
The embassy or consulate-general will request approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue an emergency travel document. This normally takes between one and three business days. The waiting period may be extended if you have not attached a scan or photo of your lost or stolen passport or ID card.
Is it possible to obtain a temporary passport in South Africa?
Please be advised that beginning of September 1, 2014, the Department of Home Affairs will no longer issue Temporary Passports. South African nationals traveling abroad or to adjacent countries on Temporary Passports are denied admission into a number of nations.
What Can You Do With a Provisional Passport?
A temporary passport only allows you to travel to your destination country and any countries in between where you must transit. If you require a temporary passport to return home, immigration agents will remove your passport once you arrive.
What happens if you don’t have a passport?
Most countries allow you to travel within their borders without a passport. The sole exception is when you leave your native country to travel to another country. Even if you just travel locally, you will always require photo identification, such as a driver’s license or National ID card, to board a flight.
