What Caused the Riots?
The violence, which started with the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma for declining to testify in a corruption investigation, was sparked by anger at the continued poverty and inequality that prevail nearly three years after the end of apartheid. The government dispatched troops to put an end to the riots, but damage to critical infrastructure and looted stores is believed to have cost the government 50 billion rand ($3.2 billion).
