About Meat Industry Trust (MIT):
The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) was established in 1996 with the aim of funding various interests and objectives within the Red Meat Industry. It is governed by a trustee board responsible for overseeing financial projects and investments that support the objectives of the red meat industry. The Nursing Working Committee, comprised of individuals with knowledge of tertiary institutions and industry interests, administers the MIT bursary.
MIT allocates approximately R1 million to R2 million for research and development projects related to the red meat industry.
Meat Industry Trust (MIT) Bursary 2025-2026:
The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) is offering bursaries for postgraduate studies (Doctorate or Master’s degree) in research fields related to sheep, cattle, pigs, and goats. Students pursuing studies in various fields related to the red meat industry are eligible for this bursary. These fields include:
- Bio-security / Welfare / Toxicology / Health / Disease Control
- Breeding / Genetics / Genomics
- Climate / Environment
- Management / Production systems / Efficiency
- Marketing / Consumer / Economics
- Meat Science
- Nutrition
- Product safety and quality / Hygiene
- Pasture / Water / Rangeland
- Physiology / Growth / Reproduction
- Transition agriculture in livestock production
- Waste management
The bursary aims to enhance the red meat industry in South Africa by supporting research and development projects related to livestock welfare, human capital development, production, processing, manufacturing, storage, and marketing of red meat and its products.
Bursaries are awarded based on academic records, the quality of the proposed research project, and its significance in contributing to the development of the South African meat industry.
The bursary provides a total value of R60,000 per annum, paid in two installments. Master’s degree students receive a total value of R120,000 over two consecutive years, while Doctorate degree students receive R180,000 over three consecutive years. The first installment is provided upon proof of acceptance and registration at a recognized South African tertiary institution, and the second installment is disbursed after a satisfactory progress report from the project supervisor.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the MIT bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African citizenship
- Intention to pursue a full-time Master’s or Doctorate degree in one of the specified fields at a recognized South African tertiary institution
- Meet academic qualifications as outlined for each degree level and field of study
- Not employed elsewhere and agree to comply with all application terms and conditions
- If receiving other bursaries, provide details to assess any conflicting conditions
