ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SANBI
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) was established in 2004 under the South African Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries. SANBI’s main focus is on conducting research and disseminating information related to biodiversity, as well as contributing to the management of biodiversity resources in the country. SANBI is actively involved in ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration and manages the National Botanical and Zoological gardens, which enhance biodiversity for educational and entertainment purposes.
ABOUT THE SANBI BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
SANBI is offering the Biological Invasion Bursary for the academic year. The bursary is available for Honours, Masters, and Doctoral projects relevant to SANBI’s focus areas in biological invasions. These areas include status report and monitoring, incursion detection and response planning, eradication planning and coordination, risk analysis, and taxonomy. Bursary recipients will conduct research as part of SANBI’s work on biological invasions. Candidates can refer to the list of potential projects provided by SANBI, and if they have proposals for other research project areas, they can contact SANBI for verification of suitability.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SANBI BURSARY
To be eligible for the SANBI bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- South African citizenship
- Registration for a postgraduate (Honours, Masters, or Doctoral) qualification in one of the approved research project areas
- Registration or provisional acceptance at a recognized university in South Africa
- Enthusiasm, proactivity, and a keen interest in conducting research to improve understanding and management of biological invasions
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SANBI BURSARY
To apply for the SANBI bursary, follow these steps:

- Email the required supporting documentation to students@sanbi.org.za and sanbi.dbi.bursaries@gmail.com, with the subject line “SANBI Biological Invasions Bursary application.”
Supporting documentation to be submitted includes a certified copy of your ID document, full Curriculum Vitae, project outline (1 page for Honours students and 2 pages for Masters and Doctoral students), two academic letters of reference, statement of acceptance from your supervisor or prospective academic supervisor, statement of support from a SANBI contact person or SANBI supervisor, certified copies of academic marks for courses studied, and a certified copy of your highest completed qualification.

The closing date for applications is 4 November at 16:00. Ensure that your application is submitted before this date to be considered.
