ABOUT THE COMPANY – SAIMI
The South Africa International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) was established in 2014 as a collaboration between the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), Nelson Mandela University (NMU), and other stakeholders in the maritime industry. SAIMI serves as an advocate for the maritime sector in South Africa and coordinates education, skills development, research, and development in the field. It aims to promote the maritime sector and act as a knowledge hub for maritime matters.
ABOUT THE SAIMI BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
SAIMI is offering the Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary for the academic year. This bursary is specifically for Black female students from previously disadvantaged designated groups who wish to pursue a career in maritime-related fields. It covers undergraduate, honors, masters, or PhD studies in maritime-related qualifications.
ABOUT THE SAIMI BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SERVICE CONTRACT
The bursary provides full coverage for tuition fees, textbooks, and a subsidized accommodation and meal allowance. Additionally, bursary recipients have the opportunity to attend SAIMI-hosted conferences, selected local maritime events, and participate in organized bodies in maritime and science. After graduation, there may be a work-back obligation depending on the company’s needs.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAIMI BURSARY
The eligibility requirements for the SAIMI bursary vary depending on the level of study:
Undergraduate students:
- South African citizenship
- Female student
- Previously disadvantaged designated group (Black Africans, Coloureds, and Indians)
- Matric certificate or currently in Matric
- Full-time study in a maritime-related undergraduate qualification
- Studying or provisionally accepted at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
- Minimum overall average of 70% (if currently studying)
- A and B symbols in Matric
- Fall within the “missing middle” financial category (parents’ annual income between R350,000 and R600,000)
Honors and Masters students:
- South African citizenship
- Female student
- Previously disadvantaged designated group (Black Africans, Coloureds, and Indians)
- Studying a maritime-related qualification
- Studying at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
- Completed at least 1 year of study
- Minimum overall average of 70% (undergraduate level) and 65% (honors level)
- Fall within the “missing middle” financial category (parents’ annual income between R350,000 and R600,000)
PhD students:
- South African citizenship
- Female student
- Previously disadvantaged designated group (Black Africans, Coloureds, and Indians)
- Studying a maritime-related qualification
- Studying at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
- Completed at least 1 year of study
- Minimum overall average of 60% (Master’s degree)
- Fall within the “missing middle” financial category (parents’ annual income between R350,000 and R600,000)
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SAIMI BURSARY

CLOSING DATE FOR THE SAIMI BURSARY
The closing date for applications is 28 February . It is important to submit your application before the closing date to be considered.
