The Graduate School of Economic and Management Sciences (GEM) at Stellenbosch University has been operational since January 2014 and is responsible for overseeing a comprehensive residential doctoral program spanning various academic disciplines within the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences.

Stellenbosch University GEM Scholarship 2024-2025:
Stellenbosch University’s Graduate School of Economic and Management Sciences (GEM) has opened applications for its 2024-2025 academic year scholarship program. This scholarship supports PhD studies at the Stellenbosch University Graduate School of Economic and Management Sciences, offering a three-year program aligned with any of the Faculty’s Research Themes.
The scholarship values to be awarded are as follows:
- GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarships: R200,000 per year for three years.
- GEM Doctoral Scholarships: R150,000 per year for three years.
Candidates who are shortlisted will be contacted by October 16. If no communication is received by that date, consider the application unsuccessful. The final scholarship awards are determined by the Graduate School’s governing board and are subject to fund availability and suitable supervisor appointments.
Eligibility Criteria:
Before applying, applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements. Please note that failing to meet all the criteria will render your application ineligible:
- South African citizenship or foreign nationality (Priority given to historically disadvantaged South African citizens).
- Fulfill the specified criteria for admission to a PhD program at Stellenbosch University (Completion of a master’s degree in the relevant field).
- Commitment to pursuing a full-time three-year doctoral qualification aligned with the Faculty’s Research Themes.
- Preparedness to commence studies at Stellenbosch University on January 15, 2024-2025.
- GEM Doctoral Scholarship Applicants: Attainment of a minimum score of 65% in your master’s program.
- GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarship Applicants: Attainment of a minimum score of 70% in your master’s program.

Required Documents:
Ensure you include certified copies of the following essential supporting documents with your application. These documents are mandatory, and any missing document could result in the disqualification of your application:
- Certified copy of your ID document.
- Certified copy of your passport’s photo page (for international students).
- Certified copies of diploma/degree certificates and official study records (transcripts) from all previous and ongoing tertiary studies.
- A concise motivation letter (maximum 1 page) explaining your suitability for the scholarship (complete this on the application form).
- Documentation demonstrating your English competency (qualifications from English-language instructional tertiary institutions or English language proficiency proof) not older than 24 months.
- A research concept note outlining the topic you intend to investigate during your doctoral studies (complete this on the application form).
- Three academic references endorsing your potential for completing a doctoral study program. These references must be emailed directly to GEM@sun.ac.za by August 15.
