About Thungela:
Thungela Resources Limited is a leading producer and exporter of high-quality thermal coal in South Africa. The name “Thungela” means “ignite” in isiZulu. The company was formed as a result of the separation of South Africa’s thermal coal operations from Anglo American. Thungela Resources Limited was listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in June.
Thungela operates seven coal mines in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, producing thermal coal with a high calorific value. The company exports its coal to various markets, including India, Southeast Asia, Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Thungela’s focus is on creating value for the South African community, contributing to the economy, and building a sustainable future.
The company emphasizes social, environmental, and governance (ESG) programs to ensure responsible operations. Thungela is committed to climate risk management, land stewardship, biodiversity promotion, resource efficiency, waste reduction, and minimizing its impact on air quality. Despite being a relatively new company, Thungela has a long legacy in coal mining dating back to 1945.
