Orientation programme
Each residence offers an orientation programme for newcomer students. The purpose of the orientation programme is the following:
To provide information to newcomers that will assist them to adapt quickly and effectively to the new university, campus and residence environments. Such information includes:
  • Relevant rules and procedures;
  • Channels for communication a​nd complaints;
  • Available programmes and services;
  • Campus layout and location of important venues.
To provide support to newcomers that will assist them to integrate into the university community, to be academically successful and to develop holistically as individuals. Such support includes:
  • Socialisation with fellow newcomers, senior students and other formal groups;
  • Definition, sharing and commitment to values, principles and codes of conduct;
  • An introduction to the academic challenges and responsibilities in a higher education setting;
  • Encouragement to participate in student life activities.​
Green campus initiative
Each residence also offers a Green Campus Initiative programme with the purpose of:
  • Managing residences in an energy efficient and cost saving manner;
  • Creating awareness of environmental conservation among residence students.
In each residence green campus ambassadors are appointed to participate in green campus initiatives that involve various awareness activities such as:
  • Saving energy and water
  • Waste management
  • Recycling
  • Nature conservation (gardening)
  • Cleaning​
  • Reducing carbon emissions
Other activities
On each campus and in each residence a variety activities are presented and conducted for residents. These include, among others, the following:
  • Inter-residence sport competitions
  • Cultural heritage and diversity days
  • Leadership development and motivational events
  • Debating
  • Song and dance performances by residents
  • Social events
Residents are encouraged to participate in these activities as it is not only a way to develop personal skills, but also great fun!
