University of Cape Town UCT Mechanical Engineering
This dynamic department has grown to include not only mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering degree programmes, but also world-class research groups that support a growing number of postgraduate students. A professional staff of experienced academics and practitioners, many of whom are recognised as world leaders in their fields, lead these activities.
Undergraduate studies
The undergraduate programme educates and trains engineers for a professional career, enabling them to think independently and to approach problems in a logical and confident manner. Skills are developed through group or team work and practical sessions that emphasise design. Great importance is placed on laboratory work in support of lecture material, and sophisticated pieces of apparatus are available to students. Design and manufacturing workshops are constantly adapting to new processes and techniques and laboratories have state-of-the-art computing facilities and equipment.
Postgraduate studies and research
Areas for postgraduate study and research include low-cost automation and robotics, structural impact, industrial engineering, systems engineering, project management, managing for performance improvement, non-destructive testing and evaluation, heat transfer and refrigeration, air and road vehicle dynamics, internal combustion engines, fatigue and fracture mechanics, residual stress, productivity and quality management, operations management, gas dynamics and fluid dynamics.
