Azaadville was established as a South African Indian community during the Apartheid era. The area was already a small Indian settlement by 1933, but the majority of residents were forced to move to Lenasia after it was declared a “white” area under the Group Areas Act. In 1959, it was re-established as an extension of Lenasia and later named Azaadville.
