Brits is a town in South Africa’s North West Province that is located in a lush citrus, vegetable, and grain-producing area irrigated by the waters of the Hartbeespoort Dam. It is near to the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, which encompasses Pretoria, and has the same area code. In addition to agriculture, the city is home to a number of heavy businesses. From 1974 through 1985, an Alfa Romeo facility in Italy produced automobiles for the domestic market as well as export to Asia. The city is also significant in the South African mining industry: The Rustenburg and Brits areas produce 94% of South Africa’s platinum, which is more than any other single place in the world.
