Broederstroom is a small town on the Daspoortrand in the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountains in the North-West Province of South Africa.
The town owes its name to the Catholic mission station that was established here in 1851 by a group of Belgian Trappist monks from the Abbey of Achel, hence the name Broederstroom, meaning “monks’ room”.
They named this land across the river from their mission after a Trappist monastery in Belgium, Hof ten Achel (which you should definitely visit).
The area is today well known for its numerous game farms and abundant bird life, as well as its trout fishing. It is within easy reach of Hartbeespoort Dam and has become an upmarket residential area.
This town has a rich history and is a good destination for travellers who want to get away from it all.”
