George A Town In South Africa
The second-largest city in South Africa’s Western Cape province is named George. In addition to serving as the administrative, commercial, and political center of the Garden Route District Municipality, the city is a well-liked destination for conferences and vacations. It bears the name George III after the third British king.
The History Of George
The Gouriquas, Attequas, and Outeniquas were three Khoekhoen tribes that lived in the region before European settlers arrived in the late 1700s. The names of many places in the region, including the neighboring Outeniqua Mountains, are derived from Khoekhoen words. The increased need for wood for construction, transportation, and furniture led to the establishment of the town that would become George. The Dutch East India Company erected an outpost in 1777 to supply wood; its site is reportedly close to York Street’s western terminus. In addition to 200 oxen, the Timber Post had its own Poshouer (manager), 12 woodcutters, a blacksmith, and a wagon maker with their families.Following the British capture of the Cape in 1795, a steward of the local woodlands was chosen. The Swellendam magistracy was deemed to be too big and needed to be divided after the second British occupation in 1806, according to the decision-makers. George was picked because there was clean water readily available.
The Timber Industry In George
Since the start of European colonization in South Africa in 1652, the availability of different types of woods and access to lumber have been crucial to the survival of the colonists. When the forest lands close to the modern Cape Town were depleted, the search for more timber moved to the shore. Although the vast forests of the Southern Cape were first discovered in 1711, it wasn’t until the Dutch East India Company established a timber depot there in 1776 that George came to be. A steady inflow of people looking to make a living off the woodlands began around 1772. Most of them were descended from the Dutch pioneers.

Although George boasts a modern infrastructure, including banks, conference centers, shops like the Garden Route Mall and Eden Meander, as well as transportation and sporting facilities, it yet preserves a small-town feel. The city is a significant hub for lodging. There are many top-notch golf courses in George, some of which were created by renowned players. The most well-known of them is Fancourt Golf Estate, which frequently hosts prestigious golf competitions and hosted the Presidents Cup in 2003.The South Africa Sevens, one of the events in the IRB Sevens World Series, attracted the best national rugby sevens teams from all over the world every December until 2010. The competition, though, was relocated to Port Elizabeth. The Tournament was relocated to Cape Town’s Green Point stadium in December 2015.
Where Is George In South Africa?
On the Garden Route, the city is roughly midway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It is located on a 10-kilometer plateau between the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua Mountains to the north and south, respectively. To the south is the old township of Pacaltsdorp, which is now a fully incorporated suburb.
