Randfontein is an important gold mining city in Gauteng, South Africa. It is located about 40 km west of Johannesburg and was built on land taken over by a 19th-century doctor. Randfontein was named after John Rand, who owned land in the area where the city now stands. Rand started a farm called “Rand’s Farm” that grew to include a small settlement with houses and businesses; this later became known as Randsfontein when it became incorporated into Johannesburg township during the 1930s. The town’s name was changed back to Randfontein in 1952 when it was declared an independent municipality.
