Overview of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE)

Selection Process
Candidates shortlisted for the DMRE bursary will be contacted by 31 January 2025-2026. Lack of feedback by this date should be taken as an indication that the application was not successful. The awarding of bursaries is at the DMRE’s discretion, and they reserve the right not to award a bursary if no suitable candidate is found.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the DMRE bursary, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens.
- Be in Matric or have completed Matric.
- Have achieved at least level 6 in Matric for pure Mathematics and Science.
- Intend to study or are studying full-time in one of the listed fields (undergraduate only).
- Plan to study or are studying at a South African university or University of Technology.
- Demonstrate financial need and come from a disadvantaged social background in a rural area.
- Be currently unemployed.
- Have a preference for first-year students, females, and students with disabilities.

Required documentation includes:
- Certified copy of the applicant’s ID.
- Certified Matric certificate or latest results.
- Latest academic transcript if currently studying.
- Proof of tertiary registration or acceptance.
- Certified copies of parent or guardian’s ID (and death certificates if deceased).
- Proof of income or unemployment for parents or guardians.
- Proof of residence.
- A motivational letter supporting the application.
