The City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality was established in 2000 and encompasses several local areas, including Boksburg, Germiston, Kempton Park, Alberton, Edenvale, Nigel, Benoni, Springs, and Brakpan. The municipality is located in the East Rand region of Gauteng and is one of South Africa’s eight metropolitan municipalities. The word “Ekurhuleni” originates from the XiTsonga language, meaning “place of peace.” The most commonly spoken native language in the region is IsiZulu, and Germiston serves as the seat of Ekurhuleni.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality offers bursaries to undergraduate students pursuing various fields of study, ranging from business and management sciences to science, aviation, engineering, and built environment disciplines. The bursaries are awarded for Bachelor’s degrees, National Diplomas, and Certificates in a wide range of fields.

Recipients of the bursaries are selected based on academic achievements and financial need. It is important to note that current bursary recipients do not need to reapply each year.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • South African citizenship or permanent residency
  • Age of 35 years or younger
  • Residency within the Ekurhuleni municipality
  • Full-time enrollment or intent to enroll in one of the specified fields of study (undergraduate level)
  • Total household income not exceeding R600,000 per year
  • Preference is given to students attending public tertiary institutions

  2. Gather clear copies of the required supporting documents, as listed below:
    • ID document (certified copy)
    • Residence permit (if applicable, certified copy)
    • Proof of residence in Ekurhuleni (certified copy of a municipal account)
    • Matric certificate (certified copy)
    • Matric latest results (certified copy) if currently in Matric
    • Proof of registration at a tertiary institution (certified copy)
    • Outstanding study fees
    • Outstanding municipal accounts
    • Parents/guardians’ ID documents (certified copies)
    • Parents/guardians’ proof of income (certified copies of the latest payslips if employed/affidavit if unemployed/SASSA grant if applicable)
    • Death certificates (certified copies) if parents/guardians are deceased
    • Number of siblings studying in your household
    • Motivational letter
  3. Submit your completed application form and all required documents to any of the City of Ekurhuleni public offices, including libraries, clinics, and civic centers. Please note that emailed and faxed applications will not be accepted.

Closing Date:

The closing date for bursary applications is November 22. Ensure that you submit your application before this date to be considered.
