What are Scholarships and Bursaries?

Scholarships

Scholarships, also known as awards, are forms of financial aid awarded based on academic and extracurricular achievements. They can be automatically awarded based on grades or require an application process. Scholarships do not need to be repaid.

Bursaries

Bursaries are funds provided based solely on financial need. Information from your OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) application is typically used to determine your financial need. However, students who do not receive OSAP can still apply for a bursary. Like scholarships, bursaries are non-repayable.

Visit the Undergraduate Calendar for the full terms and conditions for all scholarships, bursaries, and academic grants.

McMaster faculty, staff, retirees, and their spouses/dependents enrolled in degree, diploma, and certificate programs can also access AwardSpring to apply for Tuition Assistance & Bursary Benefits. Step-by-step instructions on how to apply are available on the site.

Who Can Apply?

International and domestic undergraduate students from all faculties/programs can apply. This information focuses on scholarships for current McMaster undergraduate students. Graduate students should refer to the School of Graduate Studies for awards and funding information.

Types of Scholarships

Entrance Scholarships

Entrance awards are monetary awards given to incoming students based on academic merit and, in some cases, other forms of earned merit such as community involvement and leadership. Most are automatically awarded, while some require an application. The value of your entrance award will be credited to your student account after the deadline to add and/or drop classes without penalty. You can view your award value and monitor its disbursement in the Mosaic Student Center.

Organizations, cultural groups, foundations, religious groups, and companies often offer external scholarships. These awards are not limited to students from McMaster University and can be awarded to students from various universities/colleges. There are no limits on the number of external scholarships you can be awarded.

You can mail any external scholarships directly to the Accounts Receivable office at:

Accounts Receivable Gilmour Hall Room 109 1280 Main St. West Hamilton, Ontario L8S-4L8

Please note: cheques must be made out to McMaster University or endorsed over. External scholarships have their own deadlines and requirements not determined by McMaster University, so refer to their websites for up-to-date information and application instructions. McMaster does not issue T4As for external scholarships; organizations providing external scholarships are responsible for issuing them.
